In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell graduated at the top of her class from the Geneva Medical School—proving her skeptical male counterparts wrong—and became the first female physician in the U.S. However, American hospitals refused to hire her. She was unable to break through those gender and medical barriers, so she opened her own medical facility that was run solely by women. As a leader in her field and understanding the pervasive sexism of the time, she worked to provide other women with opportunities in medicine, while paving a new path for future female physicians around the world.
